Practitioner Series:
How Metabolic Balance impacted Araleena Isses’Practice
Metabolic Balance Stories
29th April 2024
About this episode
After more than 20 years in naturopathic practice, what led me to introduce Metabolic Balance?
In this conversation with Cherry Wills, I share my personal experience with metabolic health, why I was looking for a different approach to supporting clients with complex health concerns, and how Metabolic Balance has changed the way I practise. We also discuss real client experiences and why sustainable nutrition is about much more than weight loss.

and hello I am very delighted to uh welcome arolina YY to join me today
0:08
arolina is a very experienced degree qualified naturopath and metabolic
0:14
balanc practitioner hello Arina hello Cherry how are
0:19
you I'm good thank you it's really great to chat to you today um so you brought
0:26
MB into your practice which is in Reservoir Victoria you brought MV into
0:32
your practice uh last year April 2023 can you just maybe sort of paint a
0:40
picture about what what brought you to you know to be interested in metabolic balance as such an experience that well
0:47
what I started to notice was that I had a lot of patience where I was getting a
0:53
lot of improvement in their health but I wasn't necessarily um able to graduate
1:00
them so they would need to come and see me for a really really long period of
1:05
time and we would be working very hard against the tide of their symptoms so
1:14
every visit would be um dealing with a different set of symptoms or the same
1:21
set of symptoms but it might take a number of years to get them to a point
1:26
of really good health and then I would be sort of expecting them to then
1:31
graduate but they and not to need to see me as often or at all but they wouldn't
1:37
necessarily graduate they would need to see me on and on and on and they would
1:43
need to take a fair amount of herbs and supplements to maintain that good health
1:49
that we'd we'd found and so I also noticed that this
1:55
happened more in patients that were carrying more weight and I started looking around initially
2:02
for a solution um a weight loss solution for people who had chronic health conditions
2:10
basically and I did quite a lot of research and eventually I stumbled
2:15
across metabolic balance and as soon as I started reading about it I got really interested and I was like oh um and I
2:23
said to myself the same thing that a lot of my clients say which is no this is too good to be true
2:33
that's actually part of our problem no couldn't be true it couldn't be true but
2:39
there was enough information there that I might really picked my interest and so
2:44
what I did was I booked a call with you and after i' spoken to you I was like
2:50
now I'm really interested and I eventually took the
2:57
leap to study to become a MB coach
3:03
and even doing the study um I found very
3:08
interesting because what I found was a lot of what I was learning was what was
3:13
missing out of my degree in naturopathy um like all the pieces made
3:20
sense because I was like oh yeah I I remembered that yes yes I use that bit of information all the time but putting
3:27
it together the way that Professor funf fact puts it
3:33
together and it all started to make sense and I'm like ah it was just lining up the Ducks for
3:41
me when I came out of the training I felt really confident um I applied
3:46
metabolic balance to myself um and part of my driver for um
3:53
becoming a practitioner and studying it was that I was you know um be Beyond
4:00
mid-40s let's just say that we should always celebrate our age
4:06
in and I noticed around the mid mid 40s was when I started putting on weight and
4:13
I was putting on a kilo a year at least and so I wanted a solution for
4:18
myself as well because I ate exceptionally I ate really really well
4:23
my health was good but I couldn't stop putting on a kilo a year
4:31
and when I started eating metabolically all of that just fell away
4:38
and I have never really worried about my weight since in the same way as I did
4:44
yeah um and when I started applying it to my
4:49
patients that's when I was like wow this
4:55
makes really profound difference in so many of the cases that I work with um
5:02
yeah and many of my clients suffer from very complex
5:08
diseases and what metabolic balance does is it lets me basically it turns the
5:16
tide and we can actually get into the ocean much more
5:21
easily that's a really cool interesting way you've described it so yeah so do you want to so turn the tide just sort
5:28
of fill me in a bit more with you mean so I now that I've worked with metabolic balance for almost a year what I realize
5:36
is that the way people eat what they eat and the way they eat it even if it's
5:41
healthy food healthy food um yeah can
5:47
lead to a lot of inflammation um unnecessary weight gain
5:54
um poor digestive function um hormonal problems
6:00
and this is sort of like the tide it's just where they're every day eating every single day what they're eating is
6:07
leading to these issues and then as a naturopath you're trying to fight
6:12
against the tide of just what they're eating let alone what's happening in a deeper
6:19
level and so once I get them eating
6:24
metabolically and it doesn't have to be perfect that's what I love about the metabolic de balance diet it just needs
6:30
to be good enough once I them eating good
6:35
enough then um there's a resolution uh their gut is functioning
6:41
better their detoxification systems are functioning better they are carrying less weight there's less inflammation
6:48
and then we can really get in and go well what's left what what's here that's
6:54
not the way you're living and eating that is in fact the disease that you're
6:59
suffering from and so I get to work in a much more
7:04
focused way I get to see my treatments working more effectively and
7:10
faster um I get to um I get the trust of
7:16
my patients more as well because I think that people that struggle with
7:23
inflammation weight um and chronic digestive issues they've tried everything usually they've tried a lot
7:29
lot of things and not much has worked um and so when you have something
7:37
that works it really earns
7:42
trust it's very it's actually really special when you know that you can actually do something with such um con
7:49
you know genuine conviction as well that what I'm suggesting here is actually in your best interests not just to keep
7:56
taking money of you that type of thing because of not what we what we want as practitioners at all is it you just you
8:03
want to help well the thing is is that people see me now for less time and
8:09
ultimately less often but they refer more people you get to you get to help more
8:16
people essentially as well don't you you you actually really do get to to have more impact like for today
8:23
for example I was uh speaking to a client um who was who has
8:29
many many um treatments uh over the years and hasn't always had had a very
8:39
small to moderate success and not long-term success with those treatments and so she was quite hesitant
8:46
but because she's known me for a really long time and she had seen the success
8:52
of another patient of mine who had been through metabolic balance she took the leap of faith and now now she's like oh
9:00
I can see my sister my friend my cousin my parents they all need to see you as
9:07
well for metabolic balance and so the the Imp because you're having
9:15
this profound impact and it's something the metabolic balance package that you offer basically
9:22
changes somebody's eating for life it's not just a two week a TW month or a
9:28
six-month program you actually give them the skills to eat for the rest of their life
9:37
and so once somebody is a month or two in they start to realize this like
9:43
ah um I know how to bring my inflammation down I know how to address
9:49
weight gain I know how to um address my gut and I also can eat out and I can and
9:57
I can work out what meals to eat out and they start to realize that you're actually building a wealth of knowledge
10:03
within them about their own body and yeah I think that's really
10:08
interesting what you just said about sorry um just want to just pick up on something there because um that you know
10:15
the learning that people have but also the recognition that it's incredibly
10:21
achievable and doable for the long term that it's you know this um I think I I
10:28
mean like what how do you feel or let me ask you this
10:33
um the a lot of the time people are almost scared to do Lifestyle Changes
10:39
because they think they're going to be hard or too big or too much of an effort
10:44
what would you say about that with with metabolic balance I actually think that metabolic balance is the most
10:51
straightforward and easy to apply uh food guideline that I have ever
10:56
seen in 20 years of naturopathy it is
11:02
far it is far easier to apply um in fact
11:07
most of my clients say it is the life hack that they've waited 40 years to
11:14
find and it clarifies things so much doesn't it simplifies food
11:21
choices it can be adapted to any style of eating any cuisine um
11:30
preference for eating is so easily adapted because it's I call it um non
11:39
um it's not it's actually not restrictive it's really telling you what
11:47
foods uh best support you and then gives you an opportunity to find out what
11:54
foods are um work well for you and what
11:59
other Foods don't work well for you so you end up eating in the long term on
12:06
metabolic balance you end up eating very broadly and in fact most of the time I
12:11
will see people's diets expand naturally sort of expand and
12:17
eating from a much broader palette of foods I commonly use metabolic balance for people who having allergic reactions
12:24
to foods and they will often Comm on how
12:30
their tolerance to Foods has increased so dramatically and their ability to eat
12:36
water almost that they weren't expecting that to happen either sometimes it's a real shock to them isn't it that
12:42
suddenly they are tolerating food so much better and so the other thing that
12:47
I love about the the amount of change is that as a practitioner I actually get to control the amount of change that
12:53
somebody has to face so I do have clients that are really scared
12:59
of changing and where we will just address one meal at a time so we'll move
13:05
them really slowly onto the plan um yeah
13:10
and so I really like that about metabolic violance it's really easy as a practitioner
13:17
to craft the introduction and to really find out what
13:24
somebody needs how what do they need what are they going to be able to do and
13:29
then once I have their plan I I can know right I'm going to introduce it this way or that
13:34
way yeah I think that's even it described so beautifully why it's a
13:40
practitioner only program as well though because this is not just about a plan
13:45
okay everybody follows it in exactly the same way because that's that's it it loses that's not what we're able to what
13:52
we want we want to truly see a person as an individual which we do with MB and
13:58
then actually support them in the right way for them I think it's quite exciting because it's it's a tool it's not uh you
14:05
just apply this um I've had many patients that I work with they
14:13
suffer from very complex chronic diseases and I have to apply the plan
14:19
really intelligently and um
14:25
really articulate every part of the plan um
14:32
and they really they they you see people really appreciate
14:39
that yeah yeah because again they they they're it's truly adapted to them they
14:45
see it's about personalized nutrition I mean it says it all doesn't it it's about really personalizing it it really
14:52
does and it's yeah you're teaching them as you go along that's the beauty of it
14:58
is the as you go along you say okay try this and see what happens and report
15:04
back and they try it they're oh that worked but why and then you're able to
15:10
explain well I know but this is why it worked um and yeah that for me that's
15:17
the juice because I'm educating people about their body rather than just
15:23
prescribing something that I understand yeah yeah yeah I mean I would
15:30
also like love now to hear from you just a couple of your favorite clients or
15:36
client success stories that are jumping into your head at the moment my have you got some alltime favorite client is and
15:44
I think this is this is a great case is Jean and yeah
15:51
Jean uh is about 78 she um into cooking
15:59
does not have a she actually has some thyroid challenges so already um you
16:05
know she's got challenges that she faces there and she had um seen me for a long
16:14
time and she really struggled with her weight during that whole time and we uh working with herbs and
16:23
nutrients we we' reduced her weight by six kilos but it had the weight reduction had ground to a Hal
16:30
and she really so where was she when she started with you over 85 kilos so she
16:37
got down she was she's just under five foot
16:43
tall okay so she's yeah so quite little yeah you can yeah okay yeah and
16:50
she um needed to lose about another 20 kilos and she was one of the patients
16:57
where I was like got I I'm stuck like how on Earth she eats perfectly um she
17:05
follows everything that I say we're using herbs how on Earth are we going to lose another 20
17:12
kilos [Music] um then I discovered metabolic balance
17:18
she was like look I don't like the sound of this however I do trust
17:26
you so I'm going to do it and then when I delivered her plan to her she looked
17:32
at it and tongue in cheek she's very cheeky a
17:39
78y
17:44
and and I am aware that it's not what you would normally eat is it and she's
17:50
like no I've never eaten any of this food and I said look are you willing to
17:56
try it for two weeks well I've paid a lot of money so I'm going to give it a go and after the two weeks she came and
18:03
saw me as a followup and she said okay I like you
18:08
again and I think that she did go on to
18:13
lose a further 20 kilos and um or close I think 18 kilos further on top of the
18:21
original six um and she continues to lose weight
18:26
to her own immense surprise she now weighs less than she did when
18:31
she was in her 40s yeah and does she and how does she
18:38
feel because I'm always I'm always from I love it how that how people feel how
18:43
how does she feel so she's gone from a 78y old woman who can't really think about holidays she just you know is in
18:49
her own home uh and taking her dog for short walks that was her life before MB
18:55
and now she does things like go on barley
19:00
yay I love it and and she wears um
19:06
bathers and she hasn't worn bathers for most of her life and now she does things like she
19:13
goes to Myers and but goes in and she went to DJs sorry yeah she went to DJs
19:21
and she said I felt so excited because I was going to on B and I actually felt
19:27
excited about it and when I came out I came out of the change room in the bathers to ask the
19:34
ladies which ones look better that's
19:39
awesome that is so good love yeah I never get tired of hearing uh these
19:45
stories yeah so um I find that that's one of my because and what she says is
19:53
her planed Foods were Foods she would never think of eating ever but they now
20:00
form the pillars of her diet and she
20:06
loves them she also loves the fact she's like I can now go out with my family and
20:11
eat a meal out and I don't have to worry about it I
20:17
can just enjoy it I think that's that's that MB gives
20:25
people um so there's that story um yeah I've got so many I really have
20:33
so oh give us another one come on give us another story oh so this story is
20:39
about a client another client has worked with me for a very very long time who has cr's disease um where again it felt
20:47
like that real tide of we were always dealing with very very problematic bows
20:53
so she would have green stools um mucus f bu stools um she get a lot of gurgling
21:04
poor digestive function I've done microbiome tests with her we've done food allergy tests um I've worked with
21:11
her for a really long time and she has had huge improvement from naturopathy
21:17
however again somebody I suggest mv2 she goes well look is it just another one of
21:23
your suggestions you know meaning the all worked well
21:31
however is it just another thing and I'm like well I don't think so she's like well okay I trust you or I actually said
21:39
I didn't say I don't think so I actually said it is not just another thing this
21:45
is actually really special great and she is two months into eating
21:53
MB foods and she has normal stool
22:00
and I'm not having to use herbs for her gut her immune system um she suffered
22:09
from chronic sinusitis um and chronic sinus problems
22:15
that's resolved by at least 50% just by changing what she ate um and she has noticed that her food
22:24
tolerance across the board has increased
22:30
yeah um yeah so I think that it's uh in my
22:38
experience it's extremely helpful tool for
22:45
naturopathy not not all clients um are open to
22:52
change but even a small window of openness to change like so the two cases
22:59
that I've shared they wanted change so they wanted their their health to be
23:05
different but they only had a small window open for them actually
23:12
changing um yeah that I think they didn't almost realize that they how much
23:18
they really wanted it or how easy it was going to be so they could of saying it was this could be hard so is this worth
23:24
it in some ways yeah very much so yeah
23:29
so desire to change this big you know this big and a a window of willingness
23:36
to change this big but even in those clients if yeah it's because the results
23:44
happen that's the that's the point though isn't it as soon as you get results then it's like oh oh okay this
23:52
is worth it absolutely that's the point when people realize this is not a about
23:59
um deprivation it's not about never eating out it's not about never eating treat
24:07
it's not about um having to eat Foods I don't
24:13
like it's actually about making and eating food I enjoy
24:19
um learning the principles of metabolic balance so that I can apply them enough
24:25
of the time that I can get away with it when I'm not applying them and yeah yeah then what can my body
24:34
tolerate and I'm often saying that to my clients they'll say can I do this or can I do that and I'm like well what happens when you do it let's talk about that and
24:42
so teaching them to observe what happens in their own body and let that inform
24:50
them as to what they should do yeah that's that's a beautifully put
24:57
because it's about actually giving somebody the actual um almost there's a
25:02
certain degree of control over your health at the end of the day you you know we don't we don't do anything
25:07
perfectly but you know the boundaries you now want to live within based on the
25:13
results you end up getting because we could all eat absolutely anything but you know actually how does it make us
25:19
feel that's really what we ultimately want to know but until you actually raise the potential of somebody raise
25:27
that level of Health to a point where people even realize what their potential is so that they can judge it yes well
25:36
you you know they they can't even make that informed choice no and the I often
25:41
talk about MB like driving a car so so we've got four phases four
25:50
gears and um um like if you once you learn how to
25:57
apply each pH your body will tell you what phase it needs to be in and um uh you know you can do a mini
26:06
reset at any time one of my clients worked out she goes I can reset for a day and it makes a
26:13
difference AB it does um and I think when people realize
26:22
this then that really gives them a huge huge amount of
26:29
it's like relaxed control it's like yes it's a type of but it's like the control you have when driving a car like we
26:36
would rely call yeah as opposed to being on a runaway train because that's actually a runaway train is somehow
26:43
sometimes what you find people feel like they're in there when they when they first come to you isn't it it's like I don't I can't do anything about what my
26:50
health is the direction my health is going and it's like like like you said even at the beginning you know your the
26:57
weight was slowly creeping on and it was just creeping on that was it and despite
27:03
it was it was creeping on regardless of how I eat and I think that as natural
27:10
path I understood somewhat but as a metabolic practitioner I understand so
27:16
much more about why that was happening yeah and
27:22
um I think that when that starts to happen to
27:29
people and I've treated clients where they've gained 10 20 kilos in a year and
27:36
as a naturopath I have not had the tools to address that as an practitioner I
27:43
feel confident in addressing that yeah I know yeah that's exactly so
27:51
yeah thank you that's amazing is there anything else that you would love to share if somebody is thinking of um
28:01
doing metabolic balance is there anything you would just say to to help them make up their mind I would say
28:08
that it's been even though I've spent 20 years eating well and focused on my
28:17
health I would say that changing my diet to a metabolic Balance style diet has
28:23
been one of the most profound impacts that I've had on my personal health
28:29
and I would also say that when I work with a client um and I'm using a
28:36
metabolic balance diet that I know the
28:42
magnitude of that positive impact it's going to have on their
28:48
life and so I get really excited and yeah when I can still have a
28:55
huge impact on people not using metabolic balance but I know when I've got that in the toolkit that I can use
29:02
with somebody I know right we going to get to some serious places seriously
29:09
quick yeah yeah and then you can potentially have those holidays in barley like Jean has exactly I know
29:15
they're going to be going from the couch to Barley
29:22
yeah love it love it oh that's just awesome thank you so much for sharing
29:28
um with me uh Arina today and um I'm just yeah delighted to have you on board
29:35
whether as an MB practitioner and um I think uh it's um it's wonderful of the
29:40
people you're gonna help thank you so much it's so exciting to work with MB I'm really pleased that I took that leap
29:47
a year ago yeah awesome yeah I'm pleased you took the leap
29:53
too so that's that's my you know my goal is just to get as many people helped
29:58
with MB as possible um you know I've been using it for over 10 years now and
30:04
I never get tired of hearing all the wonderful results people get that's why I have you know the ongoing passion for
30:10
it well just wonderful the the the results speak for themselves and and
30:16
that's the thing about MB it's like I think when when you see the
30:22
results on somebody else that Sparks hoping people and then
30:28
they've still got to make the leap themselves and believe it can happen for them too and that's a hurdle that some
30:35
people face believing I can get the results that other people are getting um
30:42
but I'm yet to see uh MB not produce
30:47
these results yeah yeah absolutely awesome
30:54
thank you so much Arina Jerry have a nice night [Music]
